Cutsie Dreamhost Reply to a $500 Billing Error
I (and apparently thousands of other Dreamhost customers) were over charged by an entire year and were threatended with account suspension this morning. This is the response that just arrived in my inbox: Hi Adam! Ack. Through a COMPLETE bumbling on our part, we accidentally attempted to charge you for the ENTIRE year of 2008 (and probably 2009!) ALREADY it was all due to a fat finger)!...

Dreamhost just charged me a future past due balance of $438.90. Just one more reason to finish the transition over to my Slicehost account.

Reasonable dialog about mod_ruby →
Peter argues (gently) that the community indeed should assist the shared hosting market when it comes to the simplification of Rails deployments.  I’m not in disagreement.  I just feel that Dreamhost could use a little tact when addressing the community instead of taking out it’s frustrations in the form of demands.

Dreamhost complains about Rails (ugh) →
I knew it would only be a matter of time before people would piggyback on Zed’s critique on the Rails community; the attention he received pretty much guaranteed copycats. Dreamhost - how about this: stop writing blog posts demanding solutions from the community (most of whom have no vested interest in shared hosting) and develop your own solutions. If you find Rails so difficult to support...

rake svn:commit m="safe svn commits" →
Safely commit to you repository with this simple rake task I whipped up.  This will display the files to be committed, update your working copy to the latest code, migrate your database, run your specs, and commit if everything is all set.  Another side effect is that you have a larger window in which to cancel your commits — which can be a good thing.
